Statement
I am interested in the relationship between desire and necessity, the clashing of the intuitive and the rational. My recent paintings are composed of superimposed patterns that intersect and create both serendipitous moments of harmony and incongruent, dissonant areas. While the process used to create the paintings is precise and methodical, the compositions and color choices are improvised. There is a lack of resolution created that I find interesting in its open-endedness.
For me the creative process is about experimentation and play, as is the experience of the work itself. The paintings present a visual puzzle, where the logic of the compositions often undermines or contradicts the spatial relationships in the painting, frustrating any purely illusionistic read. They simultaneously present an aesthetic and intellectual experience.
Humor is an important part of the work. It is light hearted and fun. It is ironic, in a sense, but it is not cynical. It is a celebration of the human within the rational.
